What makes Washington state different from anywhere else in the world? Is it the landscape? Our people?

Washington State History Museum Director, David Nicandri, picked some of the most prized artifacts and images from the Society's collection that best represent our state. From November 11, 2009 to July 3, 2010, view these treasures at the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma.

This exhibit not only identifies icons, but explores why and how these icons came to be symbols of our state. More than 65 items have been selected to represent Washington in this exhibit. View Ezra Meeker's covered wagon; see a chunk of concrete from the first Narrows Bridge; hear Dave Niehaus announce the Mariners 1995 American League Division Series win over the New York Yankees; check out representations of our plentiful natural resources, World's Fair materials, and much more.

See what Washington state has given the country, and the world.

Bring your students to the Washington State History Museum to see real icons of Washington! They will have the opportunity to view artifacts up close and examine some of the icons shown on this website. Our volunteer gallery interpreters will help students in their search for information, answer questions about the museum, and provide insight about objects and exhibits. Several faciliated program options are available, including our special "Icons of Washington" Ghosts of the Great Hall program in February 2010.
