Near the Falls

“…men all Chearfull, express a Desire to winter near the falls this winter” (Clark, from Moulton V.6, 65).

This desire “to winter near the falls” began to develop several weeks earlier, when the party was in the vicinity of present day Hood River. There they encountered good hunting grounds in a secure location, as well as forested hillsides that brought with them the prospect of wood for heat, cooking and building a winter fort. At this time Clark wrote:

...this Situation we Concieve well Calculated for defence, and Coneniant to hunt under the foots of the mountain to the West & S. W. where timber of different kinds grows, and appears to be handsom Coverts for the Deer, in oke woods... (Clark, from Moulton V.5, 339)

- William Clark, October 25th, 1805
